 Dear Kuna families

I want to wish you and your families a wonderful Christmas this year. I hope you have been able to attend some of the beautiful Christmas concerts and programs this season. We have some amazing talent in our schools K-12.

We look forward to our students returning Tuesday, Jan. 7 and to our staff returning for professional development activities Monday, Jan. 6.

Some information updates for you:

Parents join us Monday, Jan. 6 to learn about special education
We are thrilled that an education expert who will be working with our staff on the Monday, Jan. 6 professional development day, also will offer A Lunch and Learn opportunity for our parents and guardians.

The event will be from noon to 12:45 p.m. at the Kuna High School Commons. Lunch will be provided for those who RSVP.  More information is available on ParentSquare at this link.

New policy review process launched
Last week, we notified parents, staff, secondary students and the community about the opportunity to provide feedback on school board policies under review. (In case you missed it you can find it here.)

This is a new process for engaging you in the policy review. Each month, we will share what policies are being reviewed and invite your feedback before these advance to the school board.

The public also can provide feedback on policies when they appear as first, second, and third readings at school board meetings

I want to thank the more than dozen or so volunteers who have served on the district’s policy advisory committee. The group was formed by the school board in the spring of 2023 as a part of a process to review our out-of-date policies and new policies required by the Legislature. The group reviewed more than 340 policies helping us clear a back-log of policies to review.

Electronic Device a.k.a cellphone policy among those policies under review
One of the policies under review is Student Electronic Devices a.k.a. cellphones.

Our plan is for the policy to be considered for a first reading at January’s board meeting allowing us to access some state funding. A first reading is just the start of the process. We will gather feedback to inform the final version of the policy. I appreciate that members of the Superintendent’s Advisory Council who shared their feedback with School Board Chairman Kim Nixon last week.

Any changes would take effect for the 2025-26 school year.

2025-26 Calendar to be discussed in January
At January’s school board meeting, we will discuss whether our next school year calendar needs to include any changes for election days. Other than the consideration for election day, the blueprint for the calendar will stay as earlier approved by the school board similar to the current year. We will share the calendar when finalized and appreciate your patience.

Shifting secondary school absence reporting to ParentSquare
We will shift our automatic student absence reporting to parents/guardians to ParentSquare. One of the benefits of the change is that parent/guardians can submit information directly in response to the notifications. This short video explains the new feature.

See you in the New Year
I may be behind on my shopping which caused me to send Christmas gifts today in the mail, that will not arrive until sometime in January! I cannot blame anybody but myself for this and I know my sister who lives in Minnesota will understand because it may not be the first time this has happened over the years.

May you all have a very blessed Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Kim
