Dear Parents,
Last month, we shared that the elementary attendance zones were being reviewed for changes in 2025-26.
Here are some answers to frequently asked questions about what’s happening:
What are attendance zones and which schools are impacted?
They are boundaries that decide which school your child attends.
We are reviewing the zones for Silver Trail, Reed, Hubbard, and Ross elementary schools.
Why are we updating zones?
This summer, we will repair and reopen the Hubbard Elementary School annex. That will give us 10 more classrooms for kindergarten through 3rd grade students starting next school year.
Students in grades K–3 who attend Hubbard will still go to Ross Elementary for grades 4–5.
Can these classrooms help with overcrowding?
Yes. When voters did not approve the March 2023 bond to build a new elementary school (and other spaces), we looked for other ways to help. These classrooms at Hubbard can give us some relief at Reed and Silver Trail.
Here’s the plan:
We will change the attendance zones so about 125 K–3 students move to Hubbard.
We will also open a new extended resource program for students with special needs at Hubbard.
These changes will start in the 2025–26 school year.
What about 4th and 5th graders who will also be impacted when the zones change?
They will attend Ross Elementary.
Families may request to keep their child at their current school through open enrollment. If approved, parents must provide transportation.
Which areas will be moved into the Hubbard/Ross attendance zone?
We should know by the end of April the areas being considered for a change.
We will share these options for feedback. Options and feedback will be provided to the Kuna school board at its May 13 meeting. The goal is to finalize the change before the May 21 Kindergarten Open House. Information will be shared with parents and posted on the district website: www.kunaschools.org/boundaries
What was the Hubbard annex used for before?
It was home to the special education preschool, which is now at Ross and will remain there.
Will teachers move with students?
It’s a priority to keep our teachers at their current schools. Some specialized staff will move to support students with special needs in the new extended resource classrooms at Hubbard. Thanks to the levy voters passed in November, we will hire more teachers to help with this change and to reduce crowding.
Does this impact middle and high school attendance zones? No.
Will this eliminate overcrowding at Reed and Silver Trail?
It will provide some help. The City of Kuna expects between 1,000 and 1,400 new homes to be built in the next 18 months. This could bring 500 to 700 new children to our community.
What is the plan to address overcrowding?
A Capital Plan Task Force is working on ideas and will give recommendations to the School Board.
The next meeting is Monday, May 12, and everyone is welcome to attend.
